Great News for Maryland

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I want to share with you the great news that Maryland was among nine states chosen today to share in $500 million in grant money for early childhood education. The grant money to come from the federal government’s Race to the Top – Early Learning Challenge will open the door for more children to benefit from pre-K programs, as well as strengthen programs currently in place.

Maryland State Department of Education has assessed the readiness of every incoming kindergartener since 2001. Evaluations have consistently documented the effectiveness of pre-K programs. Long term national studies have also verified the benefits of high quality pre-K in many areas including:

  • Increases in high school graduation rates
  • Higher scores on standardized tests
  • Reductions in grade repetition
  • Lower rates of teen pregnancy
  • Higher employments rates and wages as adults

Members of many state agencies and child advocacy groups were instrumental in putting together Maryland's successful bid. I am so grateful that legislation I sponsored in 2009, 2010 and 2011 also helped play a part in securing this federal money. I look forward to tracking the many successes that will come from a stronger pre-K in Maryland.
