As a parent, Nancy King understands the need to keep our communities safe. She has voted to strengthen penalties for child abuse and fought to crack down on school bullying, gang violence. Nancy was the lead Senate sponsor to make child neglect a crime in Maryland and worked to keep children safe in their home.
Most recently Nancy King worked with her colleagues to advance a comprehensive public safety package aimed at addressing every stage in the justice system including prevention, intervention, criminal justice, and rehabilitation. In addition to a $148 million increase in crime prevention and victim services funding in the State budget, that package included scaling up funding for warrant apprehension efforts throughout the State, establishing a Maryland State Police Gun Center to track gun crimes through prosecution, banning unserialized and untraceable ghost guns in Maryland, ensuring judicial and prosecutorial transparency so the public can access crime and prosecution trends, and requiring that all State residential facilities create and implement safety plans.
Nancy also lead the fight to protect our children from the common household dangers. She voted to ban the chemical BPA from ordinary household products and to ban lead from children’s toys. After a local family lost a child to a corded drapery blind, Nancy fought to raise awareness of the danger of these items and passed legislation to prevent a horrible accident from occurring in the future.
